There are so many different options for extra-curricular activities to choose from today. Many parents only have the time or the money to enrol their children in one or two different activities, so the question is, why should music be one of those activites? I just read an interesting article called The Benefits of Music Education to Children by Edward Drosher. I thought I would sum up the key points of it in this blog because it has so many great points about why music education is so beneficial to child development and schooling. In his article, Edward Droscher notes that music develops such skills as teamwork, communication, self esteem, creative thinking, calmer attitudes, imagination, discipline, study skills and invention:
Music and Language Development: A child’s brain is highly receptive to pitch and rhythm. Repeated exposure to pitch and rhythm through music can enhance a child’s ability to interpret and understand speech patterns and become a proficient early communicator.
Music and Attitude: Music has long been recognized by therapists for its ability to relax, calm and heal. Studies have found that involvement with music helps to foster more optimistic attitudes and higher self-esteem.
Music and Academic Achievement: In the US it has been noted that students who are involved with music tend to score higher on SATs in the verbal and math sections. Because of the discipline involved in learning music, students tend to have better study skills and discipline in their schooling.
Music and Intellegence: Recent research suggests that exposure to music may benefit a child’s reading age, IQ and development of certain parts of the brain.
